27/08/2021 (Agence Europe) – On Friday 27 August, the European Commission announced that it had approved the application for the addition of ‘Vanilla from Réunion Island’ to the Community register of protected geographical indications (PGI). ‘Vanilla from Réunion Island’ comes in whole, processed pods, which are not emptied of their seeds. Its quality comes from natural factors and the expertise of producers. Réunion Island is indeed the route of all knowledge when it comes to vanilla production. It was on Réunion Island that the fertilisation process was discovered, and the processing of vanilla by mortification and steaming was perfected. The quality of this vanilla has given it a reputation that is based above all on its unique scent, which is the result of the plant’s perfect acclimatisation on the volcanic slopes of the east of the island.
