European Commission consults on its action plan for digitalising energy sector

On Friday, 23 July, the European Commission launched a public consultation on its future action plan for digitalising the energy sector.

Scheduled for the first quarter of 2022, this initiative aims to enable the development of a competitive market for digital energy services and digital energy infrastructure that are cyber-secure, efficient, and sustainable.

The development, implementation and upscaling of digital solutions in energy supply, demand and transportation (transmission and distribution) to support the energy transition has not yet reached the full potential”, emphasises the roadmap published by the European Commission.

According to this institution, the purpose of the action plan will be to develop a comprehensive strategy that specifically ensures new digital solutions in the energy sector are interoperable at the EU level.

Moreover, the European Commission plans to insist on the importance of promoting best practices. The roadmap thus mentions integrating data from weather forecasts and sensors in wind blades—a practice that can reduce the cost of maintenance and increase the output of wind turbines, reducing the cost of renewable energy as a result.

Another part of the action plan will focus on the cyberattacks to which the energy system is increasingly exposed—a situation that poses risks to the security of energy supply.
