23/07/2021 (Agence Europe) – While the European Commission intends to decide on the inclusion of nuclear and gas in the European Union’s taxonomy by the end of the year (see EUROPE 12764/12), stakeholders in these two sectors have been particularly active in influencing the institution’s decision, the NGO Reclaim Finance denounced on Thursday 22 July, in a report based on data from the European Commission’s transparency register. From January 2020 to May 2021 (17 months), gas lobbyists had 323 meetings with European officials, or more than one meeting every two days. On nuclear power, the frequency of meetings between EU commissioners and industry lobbyists more than doubled after the expert group on sustainable finance recommended more technical work before including nuclear power in the taxonomy (see EUROPE 12442/14), the report further notes.
