13/07/2021 (Agence Europe) – On Monday 12 July, MEPs in the Committee on Transport approved (28 votes in favour and 21 against) the interim agreement on the ‘Eurovignette’ Directive (see EUROPE 12752/8). This includes a move from a time-based vignette system to a distance-based charging system for trucks and heavy goods vehicles within the EU. Member States - who will be able to claim certain exemptions - will have an eight-year period to phase out the vignette for heavy goods vehicles on the trans-European transport network (TEN-T). An agreement was reached between the EU Council and Parliament negotiators on 15 June. The text will now have to be approved by the EU Council before being put to the vote in the European Parliament plenary session. (TM)
