13/07/2021 (Agence Europe) – On Tuesday, 13 July, France’s competition authority (Autorité de la concurrence) fined digital giant Google €500 million for related rights. It found that the US company had not negotiated remuneration with press publishers “in good faith” when their content was republished online. The decision—the first delivered by a regulatory authority in Europe—obliges Google to present press publishers with a remuneration offer, or else it can be fined between €300,000 and €900,000 per day in penalties. In a statement, the French competition watchdog commented, “Google’s behaviour is the result of a deliberate, elaborate and systematic strategy of non-compliance” with the injunction to negotiate.
