Jersey agrees to extend fishing licences for EU vessels until end of September

On Monday 28 June, the Jersey Government announced the extension of the provisional licences granted to EU vessels, mainly French, for three months until the end of September.

Access to UK waters for EU fishermen continues to cause friction despite the EU-UK Trade and Cooperation Agreement, which came into force on 1 January.

The Government of Jersey has offered to extend, for three months, the transition period allowing certain French vessels to continue to fish in Island waters”, the government press release announced.

The transitional arrangement was due to end on 30 June. From 1 July, the amended transitional arrangements will allow the 47 vessel monitoring system (VMS) equipped vessels already licenced and a reduced number of small European vessels (177 applications for which the submission of evidence is already underway) to continue fishing in Jersey waters, according to the statement.
