EU extends steel and aluminium safeguards for 3 years

On Friday 25 June, the European Commission published an implementing regulation extending for 3 years the safeguard measures on steel and aluminium, which were due to expire on 20 June. It follows a request by 12 Member States to carry out an investigation that could establish the need for the continuation of these measures.

The Commission found that the European steel and aluminium industry still faced a hostile trading environment that justified the extension of safeguard measures. These take the form of tariff quotas on steel and aluminium.

Some ten Member States and a majority of MEPs called for the Commission to take such a decision (see EUROPE 12723/8, 12726/15).

On this issue, the EU and the US have yet to find a solution to the dispute that has been ongoing since 2018.
