European Commission identifies weaknesses in application of Control Regulation

The European Commission adopted a report on Tuesday 22 June which confirms the weaknesses in the application of the Regulation on controls.

The report on the application of Regulation 1224/2009 establishing a control system for fishing operations notes that, despite significant improvements, weaknesses remain in the application of the Regulation.

These weaknesses are observed in: - provisions on the control and verification of engine power; - weighing; - landing obligations; - control of the external fleet; - sanctioning.

The Commission also indicates that it will verify the application of traceability provisions, in line with the ‘Farm to Fork’ strategy, and that it will verify the control of effort management schemes. Finally, the Commission will continue its work to develop methods for assessing compliance with the landing obligation and to harmonise the methods used in the implementation of weighing sampling plans.

The Council of the EU is set to adopt its position on the revision of the Control Regulation next week. Link to the report: https://bit.ly/3gIL8oh (Original version in French by Lionel Changeur)
