The EU plans to extend its transparency mechanism on exports of Covid-19 vaccines and active substances until the end of September. This will expire on 30 June (see EUROPE 12714/13).
According to the European Commission, Member States supported the decision to extend this mechanism. The institution must therefore publish an implementing regulation to this effect before the end of the month.
This mechanism controls exports of Covid-19 vaccines by making them subject to authorisation. The European Commission as well as the member countries are responsible for providing, or not, these authorisations.
From 30 January to 15 June 2021, the EU has authorised the export of 297 million doses of Covid-19 vaccine to 47 third countries. Japan is the largest recipient with 123 million doses, followed by the UK (26 million), and Switzerland (24 million). (Original version in French by Léa Marchal)
