22/06/2021 (Agence Europe) – High Representative of the Union for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy Josep Borrell announced on Monday, 21 June, that the EU would deploy an observation mission for the 10 October parliamentary elections following an invitation from the Iraqi government. He also explained that the EU-Iraq Cooperation Council would meet at the ministerial level before the end of the year so as to support the country on its reform path. These announcements were made at the end of the Foreign Affairs Council, during which the ministers met with their Iraqi counterpart, Fuad Hussein. They took stock of the latest developments in the country. “The country continues facing severe challenges. They are undertaking comprehensive reforms, but the economic and the security situation remain a critical issue”, Mr Borrell explained to the media. (CG)
