25/05/2021 (Agence Europe) – The Heads of State or Government of the EU27 strongly condemned on Monday 24 May the kidnapping of the President of the Transitional Government of Mali, Bah N’Daw, and his Prime Minister, Moctar Ouane, calling for their immediate release. Both men were arrested on the same day by the military when the composition of the new government was announced. “We call for a return to the transition, which must be a civilian one. What has happened is serious and grave. We are also ready to consider any necessary measures”, said European Council President Charles Michel. In its conclusions, the European Council states that it associates itself with the declaration of ECOWAS and the African Union and that the EU “is ready to consider targeted measures against political and military leaders who obstruct the transition in Mali”.
