25/05/2021 (Agence Europe) – The European media have welcomed – through the main organisations representing the sector – the European Commission’s legislative proposal to regulate digital markets (DMA) (see EUROPE 12697/17). In their opinion, this represents “an urgent and necessary step towards establishing a fair, balanced and contestable digital market”. “The combination of harmful and unfair practices by ‘gatekeepers’ and ineffective European competition remedies means that a number of global players have used their position of monopoly to become gatekeepers of the digital economy”, said the European media. Describing the DMA proposal as a solid basis for better regulation of the digital market, they have requested that the proposal is not “watered down when it goes before Parliament”, while also acknowledging it was not possible to make some amendments to ensure the effectiveness of the DMA.
