EU to extend EUBAM Libya mission until 30 June 2023

The Council of the EU may soon extend the EU’s EUBAM Libya mission by two years, until 30 June 2023, according to a draft EU Council decision dated 19 May and obtained by EUROPE (see EUROPE 12689/11).

Beyond the objective of supporting the Libyan authorities in building state security structures in Libya, the EU Council will add to the mission the task of supporting “UN-led efforts for peace in Libya in the areas of border management, law enforcement and criminal justice”.

If a formal request is made by the UN or the Libyan authorities, the EU Council will decide on the support to be provided by EUBAM Libya to achieve this objective, explains the draft decision. This decision will be based on a dedicated strategic analysis presented by the European External Action Service (EEAS).

The EUBAM Libya mission has no executive function, the document notes. (Original version in French by Camille-Cerise Gessant)
