19/05/2021 (Agence Europe) – On Tuesday 18 May, the European Parliament adopted Cristian Buşoi’s (EPP, Romania) report on the revision of the Research Fund for Coal and Steel (RFCS) by a large majority (529 votes in favour, 148 against and 14 abstentions). This instrument is funded by income from the investment of assets in liquidation of the ECSC (European Coal and Steel Community) to support research projects in the steel and coal sectors. Proposed by the European Commission last July, this revision aims to align the RFCS with the objectives of the European Green Deal (see EUROPE 12540/16). For its part, the Parliament calls for it also to be “compatible with the Paris Agreement” (see EUROPE 12682/26, 12638/25). Nevertheless, Mr Buşoi’s report is only advisory. It is up to the EU Council to adopt (and possibly amend) the proposed revision. Read the report by Mr Buşoi: https://bit.ly/3yo51b1 (DG)
