EU condemns Belarusian authorities’ total disregard for freedom of expression

19/05/2021 (Agence Europe)The latest act of repression and intimidation by the Belarusian regime, which targeted the largest independent media outlet, Tut.by, as well as the arrests of independent journalists in the exercise of their profession “showing the Belarusian authorities’ total disregard for freedom of expression”, was condemned by the spokesperson of the European External Action Service on Wednesday 19 May. “The harassment of journalists must stop and all those detained must be released immediately, as well as all political prisoners”, he added, affirming that the European Union will continue to support civil society and independent media in Belarus. According to the spokesperson, “there can be no impunity for human rights abusers”. (MB)
