19/05/2021 (Agence Europe) – With the European Football Championship just a few weeks away, MEPs adopted (479 votes in favour, 171 against and 40 abstentions), on Wednesday 19 May, the motion for a resolution containing recommendations to the European Commission on the challenges of sports events organisers in the digital environment (see EUROPE 12721/14). In concrete terms, the text, which advocates an end to the piracy of online sports events, emphasises the importance of the swift removal, or blocking, of content illegally distributed online. To this end, MEPs call, in particular, for a harmonisation of procedures and remedies in the EU to address, in the framework of the digital services legislative package and other potential legislative proposals, the specific nature of live broadcasts of sports events.
