EUROPEAN PARLIAMENT PLENARY / Transport

European Parliament approves conclusion of EU-US Agreement with Respect to Time Limitations on Arrangements for Provision of Aircraft with Crew

The plenary session of the European Parliament approved by a large majority (654 votes in favour, 30 against, 12 abstentions), on Tuesday 18 May, the conclusion of the Agreement with Respect to Time Limitations on Arrangements for the Provision of Aircraft with Crew between the European Union, the United States, Iceland and Norway.

The approved agreement establishes “clear and non-restrictive wet lease arrangements between the EU and the US” to “maximise benefits for consumers, airlines, workers and communities on both sides of the Atlantic”.

In addition to clarifying the rules for wet leasing, the agreement also stipulates that no time limit on the operation of a wet lease may be set by the US or the EU. This will be the responsibility of the two airlines having an agreement. In the event of a dispute, the wet lease agreement will be subject to the dispute resolution mechanisms of the Air Transport Agreement signed by the United States and Europe in April 2007.
