On Tuesday 18 May, many European countries adopted the Vienna Declaration to stimulate clean, safe, healthy, and inclusive transport and the first ever pan-European master plan for the promotion of cycling.
The Vienna Declaration was signed by ministers and representatives of the 56 member countries of the United Nations Economic Commission for Europe at the 5th High Level Ministerial Meeting of the Transport, Health and Environment Pan-European Programme.
This declaration should be used to bring about changes in transport systems to address challenges such as ambient air pollution, greenhouse gas emissions, and social inequalities in access to transport and mobility.
At the same time, the signatory countries also adopted the first pan-European master plan for the promotion of cycling, which aims, among other things, to double rates of cycling by 2030, reallocate public space in favour of cycling and walking, improve infrastructure, and integrate cycling into health policies.
