Member States surveyed for review of EU energy efficiency rules

The Portuguese Presidency of the Council of the European Union sent some questions to the Member States on Tuesday 18 May, in view of the revision of the EU rules on energy efficiency (‘Energy Efficiency Directive - EED’) and building energy performance (‘Energy Performance of Buildings Directive - EPBD’).

In particular, Lisbon is asking Member States to consider how to ensure a doubling of the building renovation rate (a target set out in the European Commission's ‘renovation wave’ strategy), while also ensuring the systematic application of the ‘energy efficiency first’ principle.

The Portuguese Presidency also asks “what mechanisms will be put in place to verify buildings’ effective contribution towards this goal (of doubling the renovation rate)?”.

These issues will be discussed on 21 May and 8 June during meetings of the EU Council’s Energy Working Group.
