28/04/2021 (Agence Europe) – The future EU Carbon Border Adjustment Mechanism (CBAM) would be “an alternative” to the current free allocation of emission allowances under the EU Emissions Trading Scheme (ETS) to address the risk of ‘carbon leakage’, reaffirmed European Commission Executive Vice-President for the Green Deal Frans Timmermans on Wednesday 28 April in a written reply to a question from MEP Angel Dzhambazki (ECR, Bulgaria). The CBAM would “target selected energy-intensive sectors”, the Vice-President wrote, adding that the Commission was currently assessing the possibility of applying the mechanism to the electricity sector. On the same day, the price of carbon under the ETS reached a new historic high, crossing the 48 euros per tonne of CO2 mark, according to Refinitiv.
