European Commission mobilises EGF to help 1,500 former workers in Belgian airport sector

27/04/2021 (Agence Europe)On Tuesday 27 April, the European Commission proposed the activation of the European Globalisation Adjustment Fund (EGF) to support nearly 1,500 former employees of the air services company Swissport Belgium with €3.7 million (out of a total support of €6.2 million). The aim is to help them find a new job, acquire new skills or start a business. As a result of the Covid-19 pandemic-related restrictions, Swissport and Aviapartner, the two ground handling service providers at Brussels airport, have been severely affected, with both companies’ revenues falling by 95% compared to pre-pandemic levels. Swissport was declared bankrupt on 9 June 2020, a week before the planned re-launch of European flights at Brussels airport, and its 1,468 workers lost their jobs. (PH)
