Electricity and gas prices for European households fell slightly in 2020, according to Eurostat

Average electricity prices for households in the European Union fell from €21.7 per 100 kWh to €21.3/100 kWh between the second half of 2019 and the second half of 2020, data from Eurostat, the EU’s statistical office, indicates, published on Monday 26 April. For gas, average household prices also fell slightly to €7.0/100 kWh in the second half of 2020.

These decreases hide large disparities between Member States.

For electricity, prices decreased in 14 Member States, in particular in the Netherlands (-33.8%), Cyprus (-24.1%) and Sweden (-17.2%), while they increased in the other 13.

Household electricity price increases were highest in Luxembourg (+10.3%), Poland (+9.7%) and Slovakia (+8.8%).

Household gas prices fell in 21 Member States during this period. The largest decreases (in national currencies) were observed in Lithuania (-27.3%), followed by Bulgaria (-21.2%) and Latvia (-20.2%).

On the other hand, these prices rose particularly in Germany (+5.4%), the Netherlands (+4.7%) and Portugal (+0.9%).

Eurostat data also shows that taxes and levies accounted for 40% of EU household electricity bills in the second half of 2020, eight percentage points higher than the corresponding share for gas bills (32%).
