15/03/2021 (Agence Europe) – On Sunday 14 March, a spokesperson for the European External Action Service (EEAS) described as “worrying developments” the arrest warrants issued in respect of former interim president Jeanine Añez and two former ministers of the government established after the controversial October 2019 presidential elections that led to incumbent president Evo Morales fleeing to Argentina. Añez and the two ministers have since been remanded in custody for four months. On Twitter, Añez condemned an act of “political persecution” carried out by Evo Morales’s MAS party, which has been in power since autumn 2020 (see EUROPE 12588/23). The EEAS has promised to follow events closely, and has stressed how important it is that these events are dealt with “within the framework of a transparent judicial process and without political pressure”.
