15/03/2021 (Agence Europe) – Chrysoula Zacharopoulou MEP (Renew Europe, France) is the EU’s candidate for the co-chairmanship of the COVAX Facility Shareholders Council, following the withdrawal of the German candidate. The UK and Norway are also in the running. The other co-chair is to come from a country from the southern hemisphere. The election will take place on Thursday 18 March. Voting will be by Covax member countries and institutions, which is led by WHO, GAVI and CEPI. Ms Zacharopoulou is vice-chair of the European Parliament’s Committee on Development, first vice-chair of the European Parliament’s delegation to the ACP-EU Joint Parliamentary Assembly (JPA) and European rapporteur for the future EU-Africa strategy. In a press release, ACP-EU JPA Co-Presidents Carlos Zorrinho (S&D, Portugal) and Faumuina Liuga, and European Parliament Development Committee Chair Tomas Tobé (EPP, Sweden), expressed their full support for this application on Monday 15 March.
