04/03/2021 (Agence Europe) – The Europêche organisation sent a letter (https://bit.ly/3sQ2McS ) to the Commissioner for Fisheries, Virginijus Sinkevičius, on Thursday 4 March, pointing out the existence of a very critical ‘explanatory note’ (https://bit.ly/3sN0E5M ) on the effects of certain amendments by the European Parliament on the revision of the fisheries control system (see EUROPE 12663/1). The note, from the Commission services, points out that some amendments adopted in the Committee on Fisheries “could reward and legalise under-reporting of catches, lead to massive over-fishing and allow illegal discards to continue to go undetected”. According to Europêche, these statements “ unfairly put into question the good record of compliance of the EU fleets, damage the image of the sector and interfere with the independent co-legislator role of the European Parliament”. The plenary vote on this dossier will take place next week. Link to the Europêche press release: http://bit.ly/3bduESr (LC)
