Nuclear power provided 26% of total EU electricity production in 2019, according to Eurostat

19/02/2021 (Agence Europe)Spread across 13 Member States, the 106 nuclear reactors in operation in the European Union produced 765 337 GWh of electricity in 2019, about 26% of the total electricity production in the Union, according to the latest figures from Eurostat, the EU’s statistical office, published on Friday 19 February. Unsurprisingly, France is by far the leading producer of nuclear energy among the Member States. Its power plants supplied 399 011 GWh, or 52.1% of the EU total. The country is followed by Germany (75 071 GWh, 9.8%), Sweden (66 130 GWh, 8.6%) and Spain (58 349 GWh, 7.6%). Since 2006, total gross electricity production from nuclear power plants in the EU has fallen by 16.3%, mainly due to the decommissioning of nuclear reactors in Germany, Eurostat also points out.
