10/02/2021 (Agence Europe) – The High Representative of the Union for Foreign Affairs, Josep Borrell, and the European Commissioner for Crisis Management, Janez Lenarčič, described the decision of the Colombian government to grant temporary protection status to Venezuelan migrants, on Tuesday 9 February, as “ courageous” and “unprecedented”. This status will allow Venezuelan refugees to be accepted on Colombian territory for 10 years and will facilitate their access to the national labour market and basic social services. About 5.5 million Venezuelans have fled their country due to the humanitarian and political crisis, of whom 1.7 million have found refuge in Colombia. The EU has provided €319 million in aid to help host Venezuelan refugees in neighbouring countries. (MB)
