10/02/2021 (Agence Europe) – On Wednesday 10 February, the European Commission approved the application for inclusion of ‘Loukaniko Pitsilias’ and ‘Lountza Pitsilias’ from Cyprus on the register of protected geographical indications (PGI) and ‘Ponikve’ from Croatia on the register of protected designations of origin (PDO). Loukaniko Pitsilias is a pork product from the Pitsilia region. Lountza Pitsilias is made from dried pork tenderloin that is cured, smoked and then marinated in wine. ‘Ponikve’ refers to white, red and rosé wines produced on the Pelješac peninsula. On 9 February, the Commission protected the Czech PGI ‘Český modrý mák’ (blue poppy seeds used in food). 1,510 food products and 1,616 wines are protected (eAmbrosia database). (LC)
