Next step in public consultation on future Regulation to reduce methane leaks

08/02/2021 (Agence Europe)On Friday 5 February, the European Commission opened the second phase of public consultation on its future proposal for a European Regulation to prevent methane (CH4) leakage in the energy sector. Included in the initiatives package ‘Fit for 55’ planned for June 2021, this proposal for a Regulation is part of the European strategy on methane presented in mid-October 2020 (see EUROPE 12581/9). According to the Commission, the initiative will pursue two specific objectives: (1) Improve the availability and accuracy of information on methane emission sources associated with energy consumption in the UE ; (2) Introduce EU-wide obligations for companies to improve the detection and repair of methane leaks and eliminate systematic venting and flaring in the energy sector (see EUROPE 12628/12). The consultation period will close on 1 May. To participate: http://bit.ly/3of1qqf (DG)
