08/02/2021 (Agence Europe) – On 7 February, the High Representative of the Union for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy, Josep Borrell, expressed his support for the “the Myanmar people’s fundamental rights to expression, assembly and peaceful protest against the military coup, free from reprisal or violence”. Demonstrations with thousands of participants across the country continued on Monday 8 February for the third consecutive day to protest against the military coup of 1 February. A call for a general strike has also been made. “The EU calls for all those detained in connection with the coup to be released. Democracy must be restored”, added Mr Borrell on Twitter (see EUROPE 12649/21). In addition, the EU and the UK have called for a special session of the UN Human Rights Council on Myanmar. (CG)
