Eugenio Díaz del Río should take lead in Atalanta operation in February 2021

25/01/2021 (Agence Europe) – The ambassadors of the Member States to the European Union, meeting in the Political and Security Committee (PSC), may be going to decide in the next few days to appoint Spanish Vice-Admiral Eugenio Díaz del Río as commander of the European Union operation Atalanta. He should take over from his compatriot, Major General Antonio Planells Palau, on 19 February 2021. Planells Palau has been the Operation Commander since 1 October 2019 (see EUROPE 12335/29). Operation Atalanta, which aims to contribute to the deterrence, prevention and repression of acts of piracy and armed robbery off the Somali coast, was extended, at the end of 2020, until 31 December 2022 (see EUROPE 12628/10).
