25/01/2021 (Agence Europe) – The High Representative of the Union for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy, Josep Borrell, Monday 25 January, on behalf of the EU Council called on Egypt to fully cooperate with the Italian authorities to ensure justice in the Giulio Regeni case. “This is an important issue for Italy and, therefore, for the European Union as a whole”, he stressed at the end of the Council of the EU. Giulio Regeni, a 28-year-old Italian student, was abducted and found dead in January 2016 in Cairo. He had been tortured. Last December, Italian investigating prosecutors said they intended to charge four prominent members of Egypt’s security services, while the Egyptian authorities deny any involvement. The Egyptian judiciary provisionally closed its investigation into the murder in November. (CG)
