21/01/2021 (Agence Europe) – After intense negotiations, French publishers—represented by the Alliance de la presse d’information générale—reached an agreement with Google on neighbouring rights in keeping with the provisions of the [EU] Copyright Directive (see EUROPE 12257/24). Both parties announced on Thursday, 21 January, that they had reached an agreement on the use of online press publications. Last October, the Paris Court of Appeal had upheld the French competition authority’s decision obliging Alphabet’s subsidiary to negotiate with French press publishers and news agencies so as to pay for their content (see EUROPE 12551/26). According to the press release, publisher compensation will be calculated individually and “based on criteria such as the publisher’s contribution to political and general information (IPG certified publishers), the daily volume of publications, and its monthly internet traffic”.
