15/01/2021 (Agence Europe) – The Council of the EU decided on Friday 15 January to impose an assets freeze and an EU travel ban on the new Syrian Foreign Minister, Faisal Mekdad. “As a government minister, he shares responsibility for the Syrian regime’s violent repression against the civilian population”, specifies the legal act related to the decision to sanction this minister, in office since last November. With this decision, 289 Syrian officials are subject to a travel ban and asset freeze and 70 entities are subject to an asset freeze for their participation in or support of the crackdown on the Syrian population. These measures will be in effect until 1 June 2021. (CG)
