15/01/2021 (Agence Europe) – MEPs from The Left group (GUE/NGL) from the European Parliament’s Subcommittee on Security and Defence have commissioned a study on the use of artificial intelligence (AI) in EU defence planning, published on Friday 15 January. The study, conducted by political scientist Christoph Marischka of The Information Centre on Militarisation, examines the threats and impacts of new AI applications. He studied which EU defence programmes (EDIDP, European Defence Fund and PESCO) contain artificial intelligence and the political and factual consequences. “Instead of getting involved in this crazy arms race, the EU should be campaigning for the regulation or even a complete ban of autonomous weapon systems and cyberwar”, said German MEP Özlem Alev Demirel, presenting the report.
