European Commission publishes list of practices eligible for eco-schemes

On Thursday 14 January, the European Commission published a list of potential agricultural practices that eco-schemes could support under the future Common Agricultural Policy (CAP).

The purpose of the list (including organic farming, pesticide management, agro-ecology, animal welfare, agroforestry, high nature value farming, carbon farming, precision farming, nutrient management, water resources, and other practices related to greenhouse gas emissions) is to facilitate the ongoing negotiations between the European Parliament and the Council of the EU on CAP strategic plans (see EUROPE 12634/6).

Its purpose is also to help achieve the targets in the European Green Deal by 2030: - to reduce the overall use and risk of chemical pesticides by 50% and to reduce the use of hazardous pesticides by 50%; - use 25% of agricultural land for organic farming; - reduce nutrient losses by 50%; - reduce the use of chemical fertilisers by at least 20%.

This list also improves the transparency of the CAP strategic planning process.
