European Parliament calls for Water Framework Directive to be finally complied with no later than 2027

It is time for EU Member States to finally meet the objectives of the Water Framework Directive (2000/60/EC), which were to be achieved by 2015, says the European Parliament.

In a resolution adopted by an overwhelming majority (622 votes in favour, 23 against) on Thursday 17 October, it calls for all surface and groundwater in the EU to achieve no later than 2027 the good condition required by this legislation. The fitness check had highlighted both the relevance and glaring shortcomings in the implementation of this legislation (see EUROPE 12623/15).

To turn the tide, MEPs call for the integration of water concerns into all sectoral policies, especially in agriculture, energy and industry.

The Commission, for its part, should take strict and rapid action against Member States in breach and should have increased human and financial resources at its disposal to do so.

The resolution underlines the urgent need to reduce the impact of pesticides on drinking water and calls for the objective of reducing pesticide use and risks by 50% by 2030 and reducing nutrient losses from fertilisers to be incorporated into national strategic plans under the common agricultural policy.

Parliament also calls for hydropower to be considered in a comprehensive manner, balancing the benefits of sustainable energy production against its environmental impact. (Original version in French by Aminata Niang)
