08/12/2020 (Agence Europe) – At a time of tense internal relations caused by the dispute concerning the rule of law, Viktor Orbán, the Hungarian Prime Minister and leader of the Fidesz party, has proposed a new form of collaboration to Manfred Weber, the leader of the EPP (European People’s Party) group in the European Parliament. On 7 December, Orbán wrote to Weber proposing that a sub-group be created within the political group. His justification is consistency: Fidesz has been suspended from the EPP party and therefore, ipso facto, the Fidesz MEPs in the EPP group have also been suspended. This plan would avoid confusion and communication problems, as the Fidesz MEPs would be able to act and speak on their own account. The letter states that creating the sub-group would also be a way of registering the fact that the Hungarian MEPs no longer share all of their partners’ values, particularly regarding migration. (SP)
