Hydrogen and other e-fuels should be deployed as priority for air and maritime sectors, recommends T&E organisation

07/12/2020 (Agence Europe)Based on a study carried out by the consultancy firm Ricardo Energy & Environment, the non-governmental organisation Transport and Environment (T&E) called, on Monday 7 December, to abandon the idea of using e-fuels such as hydrogen and e-diesel to clean up road transport. The study points out that the alternative to direct electrification exists for this sector and calls for e-fuels to be reserved for large ships and aircraft, for which direct electrification is not feasible with current or future technologies. A lead that the European Commission should also encourage (see EUROPE 12616/12). The study commissioned by T&E also considers the use of e-fuels for the road sector as an “energy penalty”. Thus, if half of the heavy goods vehicles ran on hydrogen and the other half on e-diesel, they would consume 151% more renewable energy in 2050 than if they were directly electrified, it demonstrates.
