MEPs approve new EU-Senegal fisheries agreement

12/11/2020 (Agence Europe)On Wednesday, 11 November, the European Parliament approved (524 votes in favour, 47 against, and 115 abstentions) the conclusion of the new five-year protocol in the fisheries agreement between the EU and Senegal (see EUROPE 12371/28). It provides fishing opportunities for 28 freezer tuna seiners, 10 pole-and-line vessels, and five longliners from Spain, Portugal, and France (10,000 tonnes per year) and licences to catch black hake (two Spanish trawlers). The EU’s annual financial contribution is €1.7 million, including €800,000 to access Senegalese waters. The remaining €900,000 provides sectoral support for the development of Senegal’s fisheries policy. MEPs adopted a related resolution (583 votes in favour, 43 against, and 60 abstentions) that recommends several priority actions with regard to sectoral support. (LC)
