In a joint declaration signed on Thursday 5 November during the Assembly's 13th plenary session, the two Co-Presidents of the Euro-Latin American Parliamentary Assembly (EuroLat), Javi López (S&D, Spain) and Chilean Senator Jorge Pizarro, called for greater international cooperation against Covid-19 and in favour of economic recovery.
Mr López and Mr Pizarro call for “close multilateral strategy and coordination and the cooperation of the entire international community”, including the strengthening of the UN system and the WHO in particular, to respond to the challenges posed by the pandemic.
Also calling for urgent measures for economic recovery, the two Co-Presidents stress the importance of coordinated and/or common policies to address the dramatic economic, social and psychological consequences of the pandemic and to kick-start our economies. In their view, recovery must lead to more sustainable, resilient and just economies and societies, even when faced with the challenges of climate change.
Moreover, the revival of the EU-CELAC bi-regional strategic partnership is more important than ever within the context of the pandemic, with a view to holding a summit of Heads of State and Government as soon as possible, explain Mr López and Mr Pizarro, with the last summit being held back in 2015.
