20/10/2020 (Agence Europe) – Greek Minister of Foreign Affairs Níkos Déndias has asked European Commissioner for Enlargement Olivér Várhelyi to examine the possibility of suspending the customs union between the EU and Turkey. In his letter, Mr Déndias—quoted on Tuesday, 20 October, by the Greek press agency Ana—feels that Turkey “continues to unilaterally violate” the customs union by adopting measures not foreseen in the agreement. He calls for the EU to consider taking appropriate measures highlighting Turkey’s “repeated unlawful conduct” towards the EU. European Commission spokesperson Ana Pisonero confirmed receipt of the letter. “[We] take note of this letter, including its call for legal action on the customs union and on considering a broader suspension of the agreements. We will analyse it and reply”, she explained. (CG)
