On Monday, 28 September, the Commission opened a public consultation on its roadmap for revising the EU regulation (166/2006) concerning the European Pollutant Release and Transfer Register (E-PRTR).
As a publicly accessible electronic database, the register contains information reported by some 30,000 industrial facilities on their releases of pollutants into the air, water, and land as well as off-site transfers of pollutants in waste water and waste.
Scheduled for the fourth quarter of 2021, the revision will notably aim to improve public access to the information in the register.
It will also aim to improve the consistency of the regulation with related legislation, specifically with the directive (2010/75) on industrial emissions, known as the ‘IED’ directive, which will also be subject to a revision (see EUROPE 12566/3).
Among the options considered, the Commission identified several possibilities that could improve the performance of the regulation, including extending the register to additional industrial activities and sectors.
The public consultation will close on 26 October.
