EU Council to adopt conclusions on Farm to Fork strategy on 19 October

EU agriculture ministers are expected to adopt conclusions in Luxembourg on 19 and 20 October assessing the ‘Farm to Fork’ strategy presented by the European Commission.

According to the draft version of this text, as seen by EUROPE, ministers are expected to stress that achieving the “ambitious targets” for the reduction of plant protection products, antimicrobials and fertilisers will be a major challenge for Member States and for the sectors involved.

The Commission will be required to carry out appropriate impact assessments, including analyses of the current situation in the Member States and the effects of the targets at national level, before preparing legislative proposals.

Member States also consider that account should be taken of ongoing efforts by Member States, as well as regional characteristics, needs and local conditions (WTO compatibility should also be ensured).

The Commission is also being asked to take into account the initial levels of farm intensity in the Member States (in particular plant protection products, antimicrobials and nutrient use) in order to ensure a level playing field.

The text of the conclusions also covers the action plan to develop the production of organics and calls for a review of animal welfare legislation. (Original version in French by Lionel Changeur)
