29/09/2020 (Agence Europe) – In 2019, the renewable energy sector employed 1.3 million people in Europe (compared with 1.2 million in 2018) and employed 11.5 million people worldwide (compared with 11 million the previous year), according to a new report published on Tuesday 29 September by the International Renewable Energy Agency (IRENA). In Europe, the jobs are mainly linked to solid biomass (30%), wind power (22%), liquid biofuels (18%) and photovoltaic solar energy (around 10%). Photovoltaic solar power is the dominating energy globally (one-third of the world's workforce), with Asia leading the way in this technology (83% of the world total). It is also interesting to note that on the same day, the Executive Director of the International Energy Agency (IEA), Fatih Birol, announced that solar power will be the leading energy technology in Europe in five years time, according to the latest IEA forecast that is due to be published on 13 October.
