21/09/2020 (Agence Europe) – While progress has been made in making the Mediterranean cleaner under the UfM’s Horizon 2020 initiative (H2020), current measures may lack the scale needed to improve the environmental conditions in the sea, which is subject to many pressures, according to a joint report by the European Environment Agency and the United Nations Environment Programme, published on 21 September. The main challenges identified include waste recycling, increasing access to safely managed sanitation facilities in urban and rural areas, integrated pollution management including effective water reuse policies, the need for more effective management of hazardous waste, and the need for circular approaches in many economic sectors, particularly manufacturing.
