17/07/2020 (Agence Europe) – Operation EUNAVFOR MED IRINI announced, on Friday 17 July, that the Italian ship ITS San Giorgio had joined the operation as its flagship. According to the Force Commander, Admiral Fabio Agostini, with the arrival of the flagship, IRINI could soon reach full operational capability. The ITS San Giorgio is fitted with an EH-101 helicopter and embarks a San Marco Navy Brigade team able to carry out boardings. It joins the Greek frigate Spetsai and the French, German, Greek, Luxembourg and Polish aircraft already operating for IRINI. According to the communiqué, Italy is also providing IRINI with an Unmanned Aerial Vehicle (UAV) in direct support as well as Augusta, Pantelleria and Sigonella’s military logistic and operational bases. A P-72 Maritime Patrol Aircraft (MPRA), an Air Early Warning (AEW) aircraft and a submarine in associated support will be available on an occasional basis. (CG)
