10/07/2020 (Agence Europe) – Interpreters from the European institutions launched a campaign on social networks on Thursday 9 July to raise awareness of their financial situation since the start of the Covid-19 crisis. Indeed, the Directorates‑General for Interpretation of the Commission (which also provides its services to the EU Council) and the Parliament cancelled all daily contracts of Conference Interpreting Agents (ACIs) at 60 days' notice causing, for some of them, an abrupt financial loss of 100%, without having consulted the trade unions or the staff committees. Since then, ACIs have been offered compensation of 1,300 euros for the duration of the pandemic. An “unacceptable” offer for the ACIs, who are calling for an “ad hoc instrument” to support them during the health crisis, as well as respect for social dialogue.
