European Parliament gives approval to EU taxonomy on sustainable finance after two years of negotiations

18/06/2020 (Agence Europe)On Thursday 18 June, MEPs in plenary session laid the final stone in the adoption of the regulation laying down the basis for a taxonomy on sustainable finance (see EUROPE 12495/35) by definitively approving, without a vote, the results of an agreement made with the Council of the EU at the end of 2019 (see EUROPE 12392/14). “As we prepare for an unforeseen economic recovery following the corona crisis, tools for assessing the environmental impact of an investment and public spending are today needed more urgently than ever was thinkable when the EU taxonomy proposal was first proposed”, said Sirpa Pietikainen (EPP, Finland), the co-rapporteur for the European Parliament on the subject of the dossier in a statement. The European Commission has already launched work on the preparation of the first delegated regulation (see EUROPE 12453/25), which establishes the taxonomy for climate change mitigation and adaptation, due to be adopted by the end of 2020. (MF)
