The High Representative of the Union for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy, Josep Borrell, announced, on Tuesday 16 June, several senior nominations.
Four nominations concern the European External Action Service. Joanneke Balfoort from the Netherlands becomes Director of Security and Defence Policy and her compatriot Angelina Eichhorst takes over as Managing Director General for Europe and Central Asia. Carl Hallergard of Sweden has been appointed Director, Deputy Managing Director for the Middle East and North Africa and the post of Director, Deputy Director General for the Americas has been appointed to Javier Niño Pérez.
Mr Borrell also announced the nomination of 30 heads of EU Delegations around the world.
Europe. Oana Cristina Popa from Romania has been nominated as Head of the EU Delegation to Montenegro, Tomáš Szunyog from the Czech Republic will be Head of the EU Office in Kosovo and David Geer from Belgium was appointed as Head of the EU Delegation to North Macedonia.
The EU Delegation in Iceland will be headed by the Czech Lucie Samcova, the EU Delegation in Switzerland and the Principality of Liechtenstein by the Greek Petros Mavromichalis, and the EU Delegation to the Holy See, the Order of Malta, the United Nations organisations in Rome and San Marino by the Dutch Alexandra Valkenburg.
German Nikolaus Meyer-Landrut has been nominated as Head of the EU Delegation to Turkey.
Africa/Middle East. Austria's Christian Berger and Marcus Cornaro will head the EU Delegations to Egypt and Tunisia respectively. José Sabadell of Spain will lead the EU Delegation to Libya.
The Dutch Jeannette Seppen becomes Head of the EU Delegation to Angola and the French Irchad Razaaly and Christian Bader have been nominated as Head of the EU Delegation to Cameroon and Equatorial Guinea, and Head of the EU Delegation to Southern Sudan respectively. Their fellow countryman Laurent Delahousse has been nominated as Head of the EU Delegation to Liberia.
The Dane, Birgitte Markussen, becomes Head of the EU Delegation to the African Union.
Frenchman Patrick Simonnet will lead the EU Delegation to Saudi Arabia, Bahrain and Oman.
Americas/Caribbean. Spain's León de la Torre Krais and Jaume Segura were nominated as Head of the EU Delegation to Chile and Honduras respectively. Thomas Peyker from Austria will lead the EU Delegation to Guatemala and Charles-Michel Geurts from Belgium the one to Ecuador.
His fellow citizen Marianne Van Steen has been nominated as Head of the EU Delegation to Jamaica, Belize, the Turks and Caicos Islands, the Bahamas and the Cayman Islands and the Pole, Małgorzata Wasilewska, to Barbados, the Eastern Caribbean States, the OECS and CARICOM/CARIFORUM.
Asia. Spain's Maria Castillo Fernandez has been nominated as Head of the EU Delegation to South Korea and Italy's Thomas Gnocchi takes over as Head of the EU office in Hong Kong and Macao.
Germany's Andreas von Brandt becomes Head of the EU Delegation in Afghanistan.
Ina Marčiulionytė (Lithuania) has been nominated as Head of the EU Delegation to Laos and Luc Veron (France) to the Philippines. The EU Delegation in Malaysia goes to Michalis Rokas (Greece) and the one in Burma to Ranieri Sabatucci (Italy).
